Q: Does Drape Net work?

A: On 8 November 2011 Batlow NSW received the worst hail storm in 25 years. Two of the larger orchards in the district had both Drape Net and conventional structured types of net.

In the aftermath of the storm there was extreme damage to the structure, and to the net in the structured net systems—damage from the shear volume of hail and from a decision to cut net to reduce the damage to the structure and net.

In the orchard covered with Drape Net there was no sign of damage to the net and insignificant damage to the odd apple resting against the net.

Both these large orchards had blocks that missed the hail and within 72 hours of the storm, both had ordered more Drape Net. The unaffected blocks were being covered with Drape Net within days of the hail event—fast and with no fuss.
