Disease management in orchards

Big future for fungicides

First developed by Syngenta 15 year ago, azoxystrobin is the active ingredient in Amistar®, which provides plants protection against a range of damaging diseases.

Amistar plays a critical role in responding to growing international food demand by increasing the yield and quality of grain, vegetable and fruit crops around the world.

Last year, Syngenta marked the completion of a US$600 million capacity expansion program, mainly for azoxystrobin (Amistar) and thiamethoxam (Actara®/Cruiser®).
Syngenta Amista fullpageThe first generation of Amistar products have been revolutionary, but Syngenta cotton and potato marketing manager Richard Packard says the best is still to come.

He said Amistar is today so globally significant as a fungicide it is registered for 120 crops in over 100 countries.

“Amistar has proved fundamental to producer success and has much to offer growers. Even after 15 years, Syngenta plans to continue its support of azoxystrobin, the world’s best-selling fungicide,”  Richard said.

“Syngenta’s recent price repositioning of Amistar and Amistar Top® should allow more growers to experience the benefits these products.”

Richard added that commitment is the key to the future of Amistar. Azoxystrobin, which belongs to the strobilurin chemical group, has a broad spectrum of fungicidal activity and despite its wide-ranging global registrations, there is even more to come.

“With Syngenta continuing to support and invest in Amistar’s active ingredient through registrations, label extensions and technical support we are developing applications in both new and existing crops,” Richard said.

“In Australia we currently have 12 label extensions across 15 crops in the registration process for Amistar 250SC—further proof of how valuable Amistar has been since it was introduced.

“It has led the market as an active ingredient, particularly in potatoes, and would have to be recognised as the premier foliar fungicide—not just for spuds but across a wide range of crops.

“We see a new range of opportunities in different crop segments; that is what is justifying the investment and faith in it as a long-term feature in the Syngenta portfolio.”
