Pest management in orchards

Grochem expands pheromone range

Specialty crop protection supplier, Grochem Australia, has expanded its range of pheromone and trapping products to help horticultural growers manage insect pests.

After striking new arrangements with an innovative European supplier, Grochem Australia is now distributing a range of pheromone products that are 100% green and biodegradable for use in integrated pest management programs.
New pheromone technology
Grochem Australia general manager, Ben Coombe, said the new range features a unique patented process for micro-encapsulating the pheromones, prolonging their rate of release in the field and increased shelf-life of up to 2.5 years.
“This new technology not only lengthens the release period of the pheromones by six to eight weeks, it also means they have a longer shelf life and can be stored at room temperature instead of under refrigeration,” Mr Coombe said.
More effective monitoring for IPM
“These are welcome innovations for fruit and vegetable growers following IPM programs because it will allow them to more effectively monitor a broad range of pests including Armigera, diamondback moth, citrus mealy bug, western flour thrip and Mediterranean fruit fly.”
Mr Coombe said this new range would fit well with the growing trend to IPM and environmentally friendly systems in the horticulture industry.
“Growers are rapidly moving to monitoring insect pests for threshold levels instead of calendar spraying for more effective control of insect pests,” he said.
Growing list of pheromones and traps
More than 12 new pheromones and traps feature in the new Grochem Australia range, including Armigera Pro Cap for use in brassicas and cotton, Diamondback Moth Lure and Frankiniella Pro Cap for use in vegetables, and Sordi Pro Cap to monitor black banana weevil in bananas.
NoMate CM and OFM
In further developments, Grochem Australia will strengthen distribution of its NoMate CM and NoMate OFM range of mating disruptors for codling moth and oriental fruit month control.
Supporting IPM systems
“These are exciting new developments for our company, which will help support growers as they move to more IPM friendly pest management systems,” Mr Coombe added.
